With the urgent requirement to work remotely behind us, are we planning correctly for the long term future of hybrid working? Gray Millen, iso360.io Director discusses this further.
Most of us would prefer the flexibility of working from home, in our own environment and choosing to work and get into the office when it’s most suitable. Many companies have eventually made it back to the office and do offer hybrid working solutions which is positive for staff. Do leaders need to think about the long term future for remote working?
How are organisations thinking ahead, and do they feel they have the right solutions in place to offer secure hybrid working solutions? Today's individuals are able to work from anywhere, even on holiday, or are holidays just a workplace now?
For me this is where I think we run into problems, the standard windows domain and authentication methods are starting to be clunky from a security and access management point of view. There is then the cost of microsoft domain security and access management, which is only getting worse.
How many organisations are still paying Microsoft softs and are also paying for SaaS products in the hope that Microsoft's cost will reduce, but they never do? This has IT leaders crying themselves to sleep each night only to wake up with the same problem. Can we ditch standard AD domain authentication and security for SaaS/cloud products?
All is not lost, there is word that Active Directory may be on the ropes with……. domainless organisations. Let’s face it, Mac usage has quadrupled in the last 5 years and we all know what IT Managers think of these devices on the network.
So in a domainless organisation, we are no longer restricted by the Windows domain, on-prem or cloud based. Instead there is a mythical security layer used to protect users and devices regardless where they are located, all from the cloud. This brings increased flexibility, and perhaps permanently remote workers.
Technology players like Twitter and Facebook moved their workforces to permanent remote work models, and other organisations will need to make the same decision very soon. Mark Zuckerberg predicted that half of Facebook’s workforce will be remote in the next decade.
A final note from me: As technology continues to grow and change so does the security landscape, and the demand for delivery continues to be the driver of security, which will always be on the back foot.
