How Long Does the ISO 9001 Audit Process Take?

If you’re preparing for an ISO 9001 audit, you may well be wondering “how long will the audit process take?”

And while there’s no definitive answer, there are specific factors that determine audit length. The key is to understand those factors, so the entire process of ISO 9001 certification becomes clearer.

Let’s get into it.

Typical ISO 9001 audit time

  • Stage 1 audit: 1–2 days
  • Stage 2 audit: 2–5 days

So in total, you’re usually looking at 3 to 7 days of audit time. However, that’s just the audit itself and doesn’t include any of the prep or fixes.

What happens during an ISO 9001 certification audit?

An ISO 9001 audit is checking whether your quality management system (QMS) meets the requirements of the standard and is properly implemented. This means it’s actually being followed by your team, and they understand it.

Stage 1 vs Stage 2: what’s the difference?

Stage 1 Audit (Readiness Check)

At this stage, your auditor determines whether you’re ready to progress to stage 2.

They will review:

  • Your documentation
  • The scope of your QMS
  • Key processes and policies
  • Internal audit and management review evidence.

Think of this as a sense check before the real thing.

Stage 2 Audit (Full Assessment)

This is where certification is decided.

Here, your auditor will:

  • Interview your team
  • Review records and evidence
  • Test how your processes actually work
  • Identify any non-conformities.

It’s this part that dictates whether you pass or not.

What kind of thing affects how long an ISO 9001 audit takes?

1. Your organisation size

More employees = more processes = more audit time.

  • Small business (5–20 people): shorter audits
  • Larger organisations: longer, more complex audits

2. The scope of your QMS

If your certification covers one service or product, it’s going to be a lot quicker than multiple departments, locations, or services.

3. The complexity of your operations

A straightforward service business is very different from manufacturing, multi-site operations, or highly regulated industries, for example.

More moving parts means more to assess.

4. Your preparedness

This is one you have much more control over than the others. As long as your system is embedded into your culture and clearly understood by your team, your audit is likely to run smoothly.

On the other hand, if it’s overcomplicated with poor documentation and nobody seems to get it, you can expect delays and a lot of questions.

5. Your certification body

While different auditors and certification bodies have slightly different approaches, timelines do tend to be broadly consistent, so this is the factor that will affect your timings the least.

What about surveillance audits?

Once you’re certified, you’ll have annual surveillance audits and a recertification audit every three years. Timings for these are around:

  • Annual surveillance audits: 1–2 days
  • Recertification audit (every 3 years): similar to Stage 2, around 2-5 days.

The ISO 9001 audit process isn’t the hard part – that comes before

The real work lies in getting your system ready and making sure your team understands it, as well as identifying any gaps and implementing corrective actions before an external audit.

A well-prepared business can get through an audit calmly and efficiently.
